MEMBER, FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR
PASSES AWAY
May 9th -
Member, Friend and
Neighbor Carson W. Kaltenbaugh passed away today after a recent
battle with health problems. Carson had lived beside the fire
station ever since it became the fire station. He was always sitting
on the porch and when someone pulled into the fire station he always
made small talk. Carson got the nickname of "CHIEF B", which came
from him saying I'll "B" here when you guys leave and "B" here when
you guys get back from a call. Our hearts and prayers go out to the
Kaltenbaugh Family who on April 9, lost Carson's brother and member
Emmett Kaltenbaugh. Funeral arrangements will be posted on here when
they become available.

May 14, 2012 from 6-8 pm @ Ewing Brothers in Carlisle

May 15, 2012 @ 2pm @ Ewing Brothers in Carlisle
LAWN MOWER FIRE W/ BURN VICTIM
May 9th -
Dispatched at
1445 hrs. to North Newton Township 723 Greenspring Road for Lawn
Mower Fire. Crews arrived to find Zero Turn Mower well involved.
Crews extinguished and also discovered that mower was sitting next
to shed which was also damaged. Owner did pull mower from shed for
it caught fire. Owners son was filling the mower when it caught
fire, he did receive 1st and 2nd degree burns to his arm and hand.

FOGGY MORNING CRASH
May 4th -
Dispatched at
0722 hrs. to West Pennsboro Twp. 45 Mt. Rock Rd for Vehicle
Accident. Fire and EMS arrived to find 2 vehicles involved. 1
vehicle on roadway and other off road and into the grass at Mt. Rock
Elementary School. Fire and EMS attended to child in vehicle and
assisted with removal, debris clean up. Special thanks to the Fire
Police and Officer Szczypta with Newville PD for their
assistance.

EASTER SUNDAY MOUNTAIN FIRE
April 8th-
Dispatched at 1327 hrs.
to Perry County Southwest Madison Twp. 3099 Laurel Run Road for
Mountain Fire. E247, B47 and A247 responded along with several other
units and the Piney Mountain Strike Team. Crews assisted with fire
lines, containment and extinguishment. Units cleared the scene
around 2130 hrs.

April 6th & 7th-
Annual Easter Flower
and Bake Sale was held. Flowers, Baked Goods and Chicken BBQ was
available on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a

South Newton Twp. 2200 Ritner Highway for House Fire. E49 arrived to
find light smoke from structure. E247 crew arrived and assisted with
Extinguishment, salvage and overhaul. Crews remained on the scene
until 0652 hrs.

Dispatched at 1518 Hrs.
to Borough Newville are of 76 E. Main Street for Vehicle Accident.
Fire & EMS arrived on the scene to find parked vehicle struck by
another vehicle. EMS Transported 1 patient to local hospital and
fire dept. checked vehicle for hazards and leaks.

CONFINEMENT AND FLY OUT ON 81
March 9th-
Dispatched at 1145 hrs.
to Dickinson Twp. I81 NB MM 40 for Vehicle Accident. Crews arrived
on the scene to find single vehicle into guardrail. Crews removed
roof of vehicle to gain access and remove patient from vehicle.
Victim was flown by Life Lion Helicopter. Units cleared around 1230
hrs.

BATHROOOM FIRE
March 5th-
Dispatched mid morning
to North Newton Twp. 141 Doubling Gap Road for Electrical Fire.
Crews arrived to find house filled with smoke and found fire on 1st
floor in the bathroom. Fire had extended from a Light/Fan fixture
into the ceiling and into a void space on the second floor. Crews
performed salvage and overhaul on both floors.

OVERTURNED AND FLYOUT
February 29th-
Dispatched at 0445 hrs.
to West Pennsboro Twp. Carlisle Road and Bloserville Road for Auto
Accident Vehicle Overturned. Fire and EMS arrived on the scene to
find female driver laying in corn field. Assisted EMS with patient
packaging and checked vehicle for hazards. Victim transported to Co.
46 to meet Life Lion Helicopter. R47 & E148 remained on the scene
until 0605 hrs.

February 16th-
Dispatched at 0800 hrs. to Hopewell Twp. 199 Booz Road for House
Fire. Units on the scene with working fire. E247 and R47 responded
with a crew of ten and assisted with extinguishment, salvage and

SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH
FLYOUT
February 8th-
Dispatched at 1027 Hrs. to Ritner Highway and Springfield Rd for
vehicle accident with subject laying on the ground. EMS and Fire
arrived to find male subject unresponsive laying in the field. Crews
assisted EMS with patient and checked vehicle for hazards. Rescue
crew established Landing Zone and assisted with transporting patient
to Life Lion Helicopter.

OPERATION EASTER EGG 2012
February 7th-
Operation Easter Egg 2012 is underway. Peanut Butter Eggs were made
the first week. Plans are to start this week making Peanut Butter
and Coconut. Eggs are $1.00 each and available at the fire station
or by calling 776-4747.

2011 AWARDS BANQUET
January 20th-
Roughly 120 people
attended the Annual Awards Banquet tonight. We also remembered five
(5) members who died during last year, they were: James Kuhns, Janet
Conover (Life Member), Harold (Pete) Heckendorn (Life Member),
Wilmer Hefflefinger (Life Member), and Melissa Morris. Fire and EMS
Awards were presented along with Most Dedicated Member, Dean Baker
Award, and special life saving recognition. Life Membership was also
presented to John Gilbert, Doris Salisbury and Charlotte Nailor.
Doris Heberlig received Most Dedicated Member, but was unable to be
present due to an illness. Get well soon Doris.
On February 14, 2011
Rescue 47 was on transfer to Franklin County Station 4. While there
Rescue 47 was dispatched to House Fire in Chambersburg Borough 270
Lincoln Way West. Firefighter Roger Neidigh assisted several other
firefighters with the rescuing of a 13 yrs old female from the
second floor. Roger was Honored by Liberty Mutual with the Firemark
Award for outstanding act of valor done selflessly and without due
regard for personal safety. Roger was also surprised when the victim
that day Carlita Neely was introduce. She wanted to come and Thank
Roger for his Life Saving Actions.

scene of Apartment Bldg, Fire, Borough Shippensburg 130 E Garfield
St. Crews assisted with Fire Attack on 2nd and 3rd floors. E247 was
dispatched at 0209 and assisted with salvage and overhaul. Crew of
10 remained on the scene until 0530 hrs. Special Thanks to the "U"

to North Newton Township 700 Newville Road for Subject trapped in
Combine. Units arrived and found subject deceased. Crews remained on
the scene for several hours assisting State Police and the

SAFETY DAY AT SHIPPENSBURG
LOWE'S
October 8th-
Members of the FHC
participated in the Lowe's of Shippensburg's Annual Fire Safety Day.
Members of the FHC were also in a challenge against West End Fire &
Rescue to see who the fire company was to cut a car in half
using a Dewalt battery operated sawzall. Members of the FHC Team
finished first, winning the battery operated sawzall for there
department. Congratulations to the members of Co. 47.

Gilbert Road for Garages on fire. Several garages approximately 150
X 50 were burning. Crews assisted with extinguishment and overhaul.

to West Pennsboro Twp. 376 Kerrsville Road for single vehicle
accident. Arrived on the scene to find 2 patients outside of
vehicle, 1 unresponsive and other conscious and sitting up next to
vehicle. Fire Department crews assisted EMS with both patients.
Unresponsive patient was transported to Carlisle Airport to meet up
with Life Lion Helicopter. FD crew also assisted PSP with lighting.

Dispatched at 0704 hrs.
to South Newton Twp. 2200 Blk. Ritner Highway for Vehicle Accident
with ejection. Arrived on the scene to find 2 vehicles, both with
heavy front end damage. Both drivers out of vehicles, one with
injuries. EMS provided treatment and packaging while fire dept.
checked for fluid spills and hazards. EMS then requested Aero
medical to the scene for patient. R47 handled LZ at Carriage Haus
Banquet Facility down the road from the scene.

APPARATUS BAY REHAB
August 22nd-
Work continues on the
apparatus bays rehab project. Work should be finished up sometime
next week. This week finishing touches to the ceiling, electric, new
bay doors and gear racks. Thanks to the guys and gals helping to get
things back in order. Special Thanks to everyone helping to get the
gear racks up and installed, even though it cost me lunch.
 
 
APPARATUS BAY REHAB
August 1st-
Renovation project has
started at the station. New Paint, Ceiling, Lighting, Gear Racks and
Bay Doors. Project is slated by be complete around September 1st.


MOTORCYCLE VS. TREE
July 27th-
Dispatched at 0545 hrs.
to 100 Blk. Nealy Road in North Newton Twp. for Motorcycle Accident.
Arrived on the scene to find motorcyclist stuck downed tree on
roadway. EMS and rescue personnel assisted with patient care and
provided scene security. Rescue and U47 established LZ at Oak Flat
Elementary School. Subject flown to Hershey Medical Center.

VACANT MOBILE HOME DESTROYED
July 25th-
Dispatched at 0253 hrs.
to Upper Mifflin Twp. 126 Brandy Run Road for Mobile Home Fire.
E247 arrived on scene to find Fully involved Mobile Home with roof
and walls already collapsed. Handlines off E247 for extinguishment.
Home was vacant and had no furniture inside at all. State Police
Fire Marshall called to investiagte. Thanks to everyone for their
assistance.

OVERTURNED ON GREEN SPRING ROAD
July 23rd-
Dispatched at 0835 hrs.
to North Newton Twp. Green Spring Rd and Ridge Rd for Tractor
Trailer overturned. Arrived on the scene to find both occupants out
of vehicle and refused treatment. Crews assisted with fluid spill
and secured the vehicle. Fire Police remained on the scene until
truck was up righted.

to assist Co. 48 in the 400 Blk. of Center Road in Upper Frankford
Twp. for Truck Fire. E147 arrived to find Pickup Truck well
involved. Handline off E1474 for extinguishment. Crews assisted with
overhaul.

1st DUE BARN FIRE
July 20th-
Dispatched at 0045 hrs.
to Upper Mifflin Township 126 Primrose Lane for Barn Fire. Arrived
to find Barn fully involved and burning a second smaller barn. Crews
immediately began to protect the exposures. E247 crew assisted
with hand lines. E147 had fill site at dry hydrant and later was
used at supply engine. Crews remained on the scene until 0731 hrs. 1
firefighter transported to hospital for smoke and heat exhaustion.

ASSIST WITH ENTRAPMENT
July 18th-
Dispatched at 1816 hrs.
to Penn Twp/ 700 Blk. of Mt. Rock Road for Vehicle Accident with
Entrapment. Arrived to find vehicle off road into trees with driver
still inside. Engine 147 crews removed driver's side door and
assisted with patient removal. Patient was flown from the scene to
local trauma center.

MEMBER PASSES
July 17th-
Member Mellisa Morris,
now of Huntington passed away on this date. Mellisa joined the fire
company on March 12, 2002. Our hearts and prayers are with her
family and friends.
LIFE MEMBER PASSES
June 25th-
Life Member and
longtime friend Wilmer D. Hefflefinger died after a long battle with
cancer. Wilmer joined the company April 12, 1973 and passed away on
June 25, 2011. Our hearts and prayers are with the Hefflefinger
family and friends.

June 25th-
Dispatched at 0547 hrs.
to West Pennsboro Twp. Carlisle Rd and Lefever Rd for Auto Accident
with Vehicle into Pond. EMS and Rescue 47 arrived to find single
vehicle in the pond and female out of vehicle and in the custody of
PSP. No Fire Dept services needed, units cleared scene at 0605 hrs.

1st DUE MOBILE HOME FIRE
June 15th-
Dispatched at 1120 hrs
to Upper Mifflin Twp. 1 Bridgewater Lane for Mobile Home Fire. C252
on the scene with working fire. E147 arrived and laid in before
pulling handlines and making a defensive attack. Mobile home was
totally involved upon arrival. Crews assisted with salvage and
overhaul. Units cleared the scene at 1345 hrs.

ASSIST ON HOUSE FIRE
June 10th-
Dispatched at 1225 hrs.
to South Newton Twp. 15 W. Main Street in Walnut Bottom for House
Fire. E247 responded with a crew of 5. Crews assisted with salvage
and overhaul. A147 was also on the scene assisting with rehab due to
the heat in the high 80's.

TRASH AND TREES ON FIRE
June 10th-
Dispatched at 0951 Hrs.
to West Pennsboro Twp. 3467 Ritner HIghway for Woods Fire next to
House. Arrived on the scene to find Trash and Brush burning 20 feet
from the hiouse. Command held Co. 47 and 49. Handline off E247 for
extinguishment. Spread debris around and wet down.

NEW DRY HYDRANT INSTALLED
June 8th-
A new dry hydrant was
installed today in Upper Mifflin Twp. 432 Whiskey Run Road at the
Clevenger Farm. Hydrant is in front of the farm along the road.
Special Thanks to Upper Mifflin Twp. Supervisors, Blue Mountain
Excavating, and members of the Friendship Hose Company for their
assistance with installation.

Newville Memorial Day
Parade and Services were held today despite the hot and humid
weather. Newville remembered the past and present men and women who
served in our military.

CONFINEMENT ON CREEK ROAD
May 21st-
Dispatched at 0101 hrs.
to West Pennsboro Township 1st block of Creek Road for Auto Accident
with possible entrapment. R47 and EMS arrived on the scene to find
single vehicle left the roadway and was on its side between trees. 1
occupant still in vehicle; confined, 2 other occupants out. Crews
went to work and secured vehicle and then began to cut the roof to
be laid down. Assisted EMS with removal of patient. Patient was then
taken to Big Spring Middle School and flown by Life Lion to Hershey
Medical Center. Great Team work by all those involved.

OVERTURNED ON THE RITNER
May 18th-
Dispatched at 1139 Hrs.
to 2900 Blk. Ritner Highway in West Pennsboro Twp. for Auto Accident
vehicle overturned. Crews arrived to find single vehicle overturned
in front yard with occupant out of vehicle. Crew secured utilities
and checked vehicle for hazards. EMS transported 1 to local
hospital.

TOUCH A TRUCK
May 14th-
The Newville Kiwanis
Club sponsored a "Touch a Truck" day at the Newville
Fairgrounds. Several area fire companies along with police cars,
delivery trucks, dump trucks, and other trucks participated. Below
are a few pictures from that day. Look who's in the UPS Flame Mini

May 7th-
Several members
attended the North Newton Township Clean Up Days. Crew assisted the
township employee's with unloading junk from township residents and
into large trash containers.

May 7th-
Saturday started out
with several members cooking 400 halves of chicken for Saylor's
Market annual community BBQ fund raiser. A total of 800 halves were
cooked and served by several community organizations. Thanks to
everyone who helped out.

BARN FIRE
April 27th-
Dispatched at 1559 hrs.
to Dickinson Twp. 2700 Blk. Ritner Highway for Barn Fire. E247
arrived first and laid a 5" supply line half way back the lane and
then pulled attack lines. Fire was contained to one end of the barn.
Crews performed salvage and overhaul operations. Great job by
everyone!!!

April 26th-
Dispatched at 0546 Hrs.
to Penn Township I81 NB Mile Marker 38 for Tractor Trailer Accident
with possible fire. Units arrived on the scene to find 2 tractor
trailer went together with no fire and minor injuries. Crew check
for spills and hazards.

FORMER FIRE CHIEF AND PRESIDENT
PASSES
April 8th-
Former Fire Chief,
Company President and Life Member Harold "Pete" Heckendorn
passed away on this date. Pete joined the Fire Company on October
13, 1953 and served as Fire Chief from 1956-1969, Company President
from 1975-1978. Our deepest sympathy goes to Pete's wife Esther and
the rest of the Heckendorn family. Viewing is Tuesday evening April
12th from 7-9pm and funeral service is Wednesday April 13th at 11am
at the Egger Funeral Home in Newville.

ASSIST ON ENTRAPMENT
April 8th-
Dispatched at 0949 hrs.
to Upper Frankford Twp. 544 Mohawk Road for Auto Accident with
Entrapment. Fire and EMS arrived to find female victim pinned
between the seat and steering wheel. Crews removed driver side door
and pushed the dash to gain access to patient. Patient was
transported to Carlisle Airport and flown to Hershey Medical Center.

MEMBER & FRIEND PASSES
April 3rd-
Life Member and friend Janet L. Conover passed away on this date,
after 4 years of battling Cancer. Janet was always there to help,
whether it was serving a Sunday Dinner or helping at the fair. Our
deepest sympathy goes to her husband and passed Fire Chief Bruce and
the rest of the Conover family.

COMMENDATION
March 29th-
Firefighter Roger Neidigh Jr. was recognized for his assistance with
the rescue of a female victim at a house fire in Chambersburg on
February 14, 2011, while on transfer to the Franklin Fire Co.
Newville Borough Council President Bill Toth reads the Commendation
as Mayor Dr. Becky Barrick looks on. Congratulations to Roger and
keep up the good work.

to 401 Springfield Road in North Newton Twp. for Chimney Fire. Crews
found clogged Chimney. Command held E247, E49 and TK53. Crews
unclogged chimney and went in service.

SINGLE VEHICLE OVERTURNED
March 18th-
Dispatched at 1710 hrs.
to Lower Mifflin Twp. Middle Road just west of Asper Rd for Auto
Accident vehicle overturned. 2nd call before arrival advising no
injuries. EMS and Fire arrived and confirmed no injuries and checked
vehicle for hazards. Fire Police remained on the scene, Fire and EMS
available.

CAR FIRE NEXT TO GARAGE
March 3rd-
Dispatched at 1106 hrs.
to North Newton Twp. 46 Nealy Road for Car Fire. Headquarters
advised upgrading due to garage involved now. E247 crew arrived to
find fully involved vehicle and impinging on garage. E247 crew and
pulled handline and made attack. Checked for and found no extension
into the garage. Owner advised he went out to warm car up and came
back out 20 min later and found car involved. Minor damage to Garage
doors and siding, car was total loss.

EGG OPERATION IN FULL SWING
March 1st-
The 2011 Easter Egg
operation is in full swing. Crews began last week making eggs.
Peanut Butter, Coconut, and Cherry eggs are now available. Price
increase due to cost ingredients. Eggs $1.00 each.

DICKINSON TOWNSHIP - HOUSE FIRE
February 17th-
Dispatched at 0249 hrs.
to Dickinson Township 1352 Pine Road for House Fire. E247 responded
and was used as a tanker. Remained on the scene until 0530 hrs.

FRANKLIN COUNTY - HOUSE FIRE
February 14th-
While Rescue 47 was on
transfer to the BIG HOUSE, Franklin County Station 4, crews
responded to a House Fire in Borough of Chambersburg 270 Lincoln Way
East. Crews arrived and found rear of house totally involved. Crews
were told there were people still inside. Co. 47 Firefighter Roger
Neidigh along with 3 others Franklin County F/F's found and rescued
female juvenile from 2nd floor smoke filled bedroom. Crews assisted
with salvage and overhaul and remained on the scene until 1800 hrs.
Female was taken to Chambersburg Hospital and later transferred to
John Hopkins Burn Center. Congratulations Roger and the other F/F's
a job well done.

MUTUAL AID TO PERRY COUNTY -
HOUSE FIRE
February 11th-
Dispatched at 1400 hrs
to Transfer to Perry County Co. 4, while enroute we were requested
to respond to the scene of the House Fire in Carroll Twp. 335 Church
Road. Crew assisted with salvage and overhaul, while E247 hauled 2
loads of water to the scene.

HOUSE FIRE THE BOROUGH
February 1st-
Dispatched at 1252 hrs
to 76 E. Main Street, Newville Borough for Smoke in Building. After
checking three apartments, fire was discovered in the middle
apartment laundry room. Fire was quickly extinguished and contained
to the laundry room. Crews performed salvage and overhaul.

ANOTHER TRACTOR TRAILER CRASH
January 5th-
Dispatched
at 0203 hrs. to Penn Twp. I-81 NB area of NB Rest Area for Tractor
Trailer Accident with Entrapment. Units arrived to find driver of
one tractor trailer still in cab of truck. Driver then self
extricated himself. Crews controlled large diesel fuel spill and
checked vehicles for other hazards. One truck ran off the road and
struck 2 parked trucks along the road. Driver was transported by EMS
to hospital. Units remained on scene and provided lighting for clean
up.

at 0429 hrs. to Penn Twp. I 81 NB MM 35.5 for Tractor Trailer
Accident with Entrapment. MP47 responded in place of Engine147 and
was assigned to establish Landing Zone for Life Lion Helicopter.
Other crew members assisted at the scene with extrication. Driver
was flown from the scene. Crews remained on the scene well into
daylight.
